Full of ideas we think are epic, but don’t *quite* land the way we envision, at least not the first time. Or the second. Or third.

The process of writing a book has been filled with soaring highs…and some hard landings. I’ve had people ask about it so thought I’d share a bit of the behind-the-scenes reality.

Finding an agent - not easy, prepare for rejection. Developing a unique, authentic POV in a crowded book market. Not always a fun endeavor. Writing the book draft. Crafting a compelling publisher pitch. Waiting on replies. Some crashes. Try again. Waiting more. Get a book deal - amazing high. Then: Editing, editing, editing. Finalizing the manuscript. Reaching out to early endorsers. Waiting more. Some more crashes. Publication - total euphoria. Waiting on reviews, highs, crashes. More pitching. And on and on…

Like Finn with his ski tricks, it’s all about believing in yourself, trying over and over, crashing, dusting yourself off, trying some more, and never giving up. 💪

Full send, no landing plan. But that makes the successes all the more sweet, right?

Growing up in Puerto Rico, I didn’t know seasons. I remember my first glimpse of fall, visiting my grandparents in Indiana and seeing the glorious autumn foliage — it was magical to me.

Our annual trips to Colorado for a week of winter filled me with a lifelong love of snow and the pure, glimmering beauty of winter.

And then there’s spring…

Springtime in CO always fills me with a heady sense of optimism and promise, the vibrant newness of a world that was dormant waking up to a new dawn…

There’s a lot to be frustrated about right now in the world, much to be disappointed and angry about. I’ve had many of you ask for this, so here’s our 7-day, family-tested, friend-approved CR itinerary. 🐒🌴

It’s 4 nights at the beach + 4 nights in the cloud forest of Guanacaste province, in the northwest of the country on the Pacific.

We skipped the touristy spots (like Arenal & Tamarindo) for a more low-key vibe—with surf, sunsets, ziplines, wildlife & waterfalls, but of course you could swap those in. We also traveled with two other families, which opened up fun Airbnb stays and, of course, made it a blast.

We sometimes spend so much energy gripping tightly—plans, expectations, old stories, control. But there’s clarity in release. Like the waterfall, there’s strength in surrender, in trusting gravity to carry what no longer needs holding.

I sometimes want to do so much on trips—knowing how much there is to see, do, and experience.

But on this trip to Costa Rica, I embraced the slower pace. The dynamics of traveling with a bigger group. I stopped trying to squeeze the most out of every moment—and just let it be. Let myself get swept away in the tranquilo vibe…

Chasing waterfalls in Monteverde — and this one’s a stunner. 😳🌈💧

El Tigre Waterfalls is a full-on choose your own adventure kind of day: 4 waterfalls, jungle trails, hanging bridges, and views for days.

The best part? You can hike the whole loop or make things easier by adding a horseback ride or 4x4 jeep for the final steep uphill stretch. 🐴🛻

We wrapped our hike with the bicicle zipline — yes, a bike zipline through the canopy — and it was way more fun (and less scary!) than expected. 🚲

Tips if you go:

💦 Wear hiking shoes or sandals with grip — trails can get slick.

💦 Pack a rain jacket and dry bag for your phone.

💦 Bring a swimsuit if you’re up for a cold plunge in the cascades!

💦 You don’t have to decide everything ahead of time — you can add the horseback ride, jeep, or bike zipline when you arrive.

💦 Plan for 3–5 hours depending on pace and detours. The park is super well marked and welcoming.

👉 Tag a fellow waterfall lover or someone who needs this kind of wild beauty in their life!

I have never liked the feeling of free fall. No bungee jumping or sky diving for me.

So when we had the option to do a Tarzan swing in the cloud forests of Costa Rica, my first thought was, “um, no.”

But then after watching others — including everyone else in the fam and friends — leap into a brief fall before the rope went taut then soar gracefully through the sky, big smiles on their faces, I thought, “What the hell. Looks fun.”

Let’s say my flight was less graceful and much louder than most. 😂 And, clearly, I gave the spectators a good laugh.

Moral of the story: I remain steadfast in my dislike of free falls. Not much personal growth on this one.

At the Airbnb we rented near Playa Carrillo, Costa Rica, there was a promontory at the edge of the property overlooking the Pacific. Facing west, it had a semi circle of plastic chairs perfectly positioned for prime sunset viewing.

Every night some or all of our crew of three families would meander over around 5:30pm to watch the sun set over the horizon — languidly at first, then seemingly faster and faster as it plunged toward the sea.

Just when you thought the show was over, the sky would shift hues, showing off in shades of bright coral, green, amber, and burgundy before succumbing to nightfall and letting the stars take center stage.

It was such a peaceful outcropping. The birds and insects chirping and buzzing overhead. The waves crashing on the rocks below. The sea breeze whistling through the leaves overhead. And that beautiful dance of the sun and sea, which never ceases to amaze.

Fantastic day out on the water for the kids, learning to surf with @patossurfschool in Playa Sámara. The waves were pretty gentle in the morning, perfect for beginners, and the instructors were great. They had a blast catching waves — and tumbling — laughing together in the warm surf. 🏄‍♂️

In ancient Olympia, Greece, we slipped on VR goggles and boom—we were standing in a fully restored Temple of Zeus, surrounded by statues, columns, and the sounds of an ancient city.
