Discover where to go for wild adventures and meaningful family travel.
If you're an animal lover with a penchant for travel, your wanderlist is about to get a little longer. The world is filled with incredible destinations where wildlife roams free, and some spots offer encounters so magical they hardly seem real. Here’s a roundup of our family’s top ten favorite spots for unforgettable wildlife experiences:

1. Galápagos Islands, Ecuador
The Galápagos Islands are a true nature lover’s paradise, famed for their unique ecosystem. Here, you can walk among giant tortoises, marvel at the leisurely pace of marine iguanas, and be charmed by the playful dance of blue-footed boobies. Each island boasts its own unique wildlife, making every visit a new discovery above the waves and below. (No need to scuba - the snorkeling is equally incredible, making it a good option for families with kids of all ages).

2. Jigokudani, Japan
Imagine watching snow monkeys as they soak in natural hot springs, their faces expressing pure bliss against a snowy backdrop. Jigokudani offers this unique spectacle, which is as heartwarming in the chilly winters as it is delightful in the blossoming spring.

3. Komodo, Indonesia
For those who crave a double dose of adventure—both land and sea—Komodo is the place to be. Dive into crystal-clear waters to swim alongside manta rays, sharks, and turtles, or tread carefully on land where the mighty Komodo dragons roam. This lesser-known gem in Indonesia offers no shortage of thrilling encounters with some of the planet’s most formidable creatures.

4. Khutzeymateen, Canada
In the remote wilds of Khutzeymateen, you can witness nature in its most undisturbed form. Home to grizzlies, whales, otters, sea birds, and a plethora of other wildlife, this sanctuary offers a rugged, untouched wilderness experience that feels a world away from civilization. (Bonus for all of us: we flew in to the remote floating lodge via sea plane and spent our days zooming up and down the forested inlets. I also rented a telephoto lens for my DSLR camera, which was a fab week-long investment, allowing me to capture amazing photos of the wildlife on shore and in the sea).

5. Tanzania
Whether it’s witnessing the Great Migration or exploring the vast landscapes of Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania is a jewel in the crown of African wildlife safaris (though we have to caveat this by saying we also have been fortunate enough to do safaris in a few other places in Africa, and they are ALL amazing and worthy of space on this list!). Here, the Big Five roam freely, and every safari drive feels like stepping into a live documentary – like the time we saw a cheetah dart into a herd of wildebeest and take one down. It was like a National Geographic show unfolding before our eyes. Unreal!

6. Fakarava, French Polynesia
Dive in the waters of remote Fakarava amidst walls of hundreds of sharks, manta rays, and massive schools of vibrant tropical fish. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve offers an underwater spectacle akin to swimming in a giant, living aquarium. It’s untouched, hard to get to, and worth the trek.

7. Sydney, Australia
Australia’s wildlife is as varied as its landscapes. In Sydney and its surrounds, you can encounter everything from kangaroos and koalas to whales and wallabies. Each creature offers a glimpse into Australia’s wild heart, and was a big hit with our kiddos.

8. Antarctica
Travel to the ends of the Earth for a monumental wildlife adventure in Antarctica. Admittedly, this is a TREK to get to and a pricey one at that (though there are hacks we talk about on how to do it on more of a budget), but if you can swing it, it’s the epitome of wild wonder. Amidst a stark landscape of icebergs and glaciers, you can observe penguins, seals, and whales thriving in their icy habitat. It’s a remote, awe-inspiring experience that belongs on every wildlife lover’s list.

9. Namibia
Namibia’s vast, arid spaces are home to fascinating creatures like oryx, kudu, and giraffes. The Caprivi Strip, lush and water-rich, offers a contrasting experience with abundant wildlife watching opportunities in a less traversed part of Africa. Gorgeous!

10. Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a treasure trove of biodiversity. The rainforests here are brimming with sloths, monkeys, toucans, butterflies, and even elusive jaguars, offering endless opportunities for wildlife observation in lush, verdant settings.
And while these spots are already amazing, our family wildlife wish list still has room to grow. Next on our wander list? Uganda, to see the mountain gorillas. It’s a super pricey trip, though, so it might have to wait. But hey, dreaming about it is half the fun, right?
Each of these destinations offers a unique window into the world of wildlife and reminds us of the incredible diversity of our planet. Whether you’re snorkeling with sharks or watching monkeys in hot springs, these experiences are sure to fuel your love for animals and adventure for years to come.
